Themis Tasoulis was born in Athens (1936). He is considered to be one of the most prominent and prolific representatives of modem poetry in Greece. His large output (consisting of 9 collections) has been translated into various languages. These poems were first set to music as early as 1984, and are a direct response of the composer to Tasoulis' poetry. Fifteen years later, the songs were revised, appearing in two versions, one with the original Greek text, and one with its translation in English plus guitar accompaniment. Α piano version was also made the following year. 

In these songs, the composer - in his customary fashion - strives to make the music serve the requirements of the text, without, however, allowing it to lose its integrity and interest. These songs are permeated by a neo- romantic aura with impressionistic, various nationalistic and Rock elements. They received their first performance on December 8th, 2000 by D. Panourgia [soprano] and Ν. Karali [piano], at the French Institute in Athens

"LYRIC PIECES" - 12 pieces for guitar - INTRODUCTION

These Lyric Pieces have been written over a period of several years. Eleven οf them commissioned by the VoIos InternationaI FestivaI of CΙassicaI Guitar, directed by Mr. Κ. Kotsiolίs, and have been played by guitar competitors at the Festival for the past years.

The response to this music has gone beyond the boundaries of the Festival: photocopies of these works have circulated between guitarists and Ι have been told that they are being played in many places. This, combined with their favourable reception by music lovers, when Ι played them at recitals, has convinced me to publish these pieces.

Ι have taken this opportunity to make a few alterations to some of them. Ι call these compositions Lyric Pieces because they are based on melody and are written in the minor key.

Apart from their educational role and their character as concert pieces, Ι have also tried το find the perfect median between pure music composition and guitar's limits and peculiarities. The Lyric Pieces are the result of hard work prompted by aspiration and loνe and Ι do not hide the fact that notwithstanding any eventual inspiration, every note of this music was written with a great deal of thought.

Parts one and three were written a long time ago, in a simpIe, melodic fashion. When in 1998 it was decided to be extended into a Suite, parts two and four were added using previously undisposed material, which was further extended through the use of more contemporary compositional techniques. This served a double purpose, nameIy that of keeping a uniform lyrical character while including elements imposed by compositional considerations. The role of the guitar is more prominent than usual, since it does not limit itself to simple accompaniment. The work has been dedicated to Duo Echochromata, who have included it in their recent cd. It was first performed in July 1997 at the 4th International Guitar Congress - Festival of Corfu.

The first part is in sonata form. The development of the first theme, which is short aπd linear-melodic, is gradual, while the second theme is more lyrical aπd texturally chordal. Then follows an extensive elaboration, development and interweaving of themes in dramatic fashion. 

 

The second part is lyrical in nature with a characteristic modal melody shaping itself gradually without any traces of repetition. Α rhythmically constant arpeggio- pedal pinpoints the ecstatic mood of this part. 

 

Α second melodic idea gradually emerges alongside the first, leading, after a series of exchanges, to a climax. This in turn harks back to beginning giving the irnpression of a perpetual circular motion. 

 

The third part, also faithful to the sonata semiology, makes use of the variation technique based οn a singIe note. This one note creates, through a series of transformations, melodic, harmonic and rhythmic enviroments in which it plays a leading role. 

The piece received its first perfoπnance by D. Kasfikis οα Αρτί! 6th, 200 Ι. at the French Institute of Athens.

THE BREAK UP SCENE Ορ. 9 For Flute or Violin and Piano (1998) 

The work is programmatic and desciptiνe in content and it therefore, does not adhere tο any specific musical forrn. The tale describes the permanent terrnination of a re!ationship and the woman' s determination to bring it to such an end.

Thoughts, memories, feelings and dialogues follow one another with cinematic density. The musical landscape is grave, intensively melancholic and fragile. The illusory Farewell Waltz together with the physical parting of the players on stage, intensify the atmosphere. 

Valse Triste's pure musica! content also functions as a relief within the work' s programmatic context. The musically semiological reference of the tale is approached from a rather traditional standpoint, based on neo- romantic, post- impressionistic and jazz techniques.

Both instruments have an equal share of respoosibilities. Its first performance was given by Nina Patrikidou [violin] and Nicole Karali [piano], on October 31 st, 1998, at the Municipal Centre of Athens.

Variations on Thalassaki

VARIATIONS on "Thalassaki" Ορ.8 For two Guitars (1998) 

This set of variations is based οχ the above well- known hellenic island folk song, which is heard at the beginning of the piece.

The first variation is in essence an anti-variation, since the song itself is the one element that is retrospectively being heard as a variant, after being subjected to a kind of Schenkerian reduction in a pan-diatonic background.

The second variation forms a polyphonic episode and stretto.

The third one, is a lament in a rather free form with musica! connotations of the water- element, given the fact that the lyrics of the song refer to a tragical incident of drowning.

In accordance to the character of the song on which it is based, the forth variation is likewise, dance-like, ending with an incomplete fugue, which forms the climax of the work. 

Both guitars make good use of their timbal resources.

The CD of this work is about to be released with the composer performing alongside Υ. Foudoulis a programme of contemporary Greek music. The work' s premiere was given by V. Tigiridis and Κ. Mitrokotsas on July 4th, 2000, at the Athena Music Stage.
